Gubernatorial Candidates’ Responses to Statewide Housing and Homelessness Questionnaire

Responses outline candidates’ perspectives on affordability, housing production, renter protections,
and long-term stability

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SACRAMENTO, CA — April 1, 2026 On behalf of a 29 organizations committed to increasing affordable housing, protecting low-income renters, and ending homelessness, Housing California today released responses from 2026 California gubernatorial candidates to a statewide questionnaire focused on housing affordability, homelessness, and economic stability.

California continues to face ongoing challenges related to housing affordability and homelessness,
with impacts felt across urban, suburban, rural, and Tribal communities. The next governor will play a
key role in shaping how the state responds to these conditions.

The questionnaire asked candidates to share their perspectives on a range of issues, including housing costs, the role of state government in meeting projected housing needs, renter protections, long-term planning, federal funding changes, economic opportunity, and climate-related risks. The responses provide a side-by-side view of how candidates are approaching some of the most significant issues facing Californians today.

As a follow-up to their recently hosted Gubernatorial Forum at the Housing California Annual Conference, the nation’s largest affordable housing and homelessness conference, Housing California invited all declared gubernatorial candidates to respond to the questionnaire. Responses will continue to be accepted and published on a rolling basis.
