Sara Johnson
Statewide Organizer
Sara Johnson joined Housing California in October 2024 as a Statewide Organizer. In this role, she helps advance Housing California’s mission by growing and strengthening the RUN network and increasing the impact of RUN leaders on state-level homelessness and affordable housing policies.
Originally from Hawaii, Sara is a dedicated advocate for housing justice and community empowerment. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2022 with a degree in Medical Anthropology and a minor in Political Science, focusing on disparities and their embodiment in communities. Her studies led her to a career in housing advocacy, where she served as a senior community organizer for three years at Mutual Housing California, emphasizing residents’ leadership development and housing policy.
Before her work in California, Sara spent four years internationally, teaching women’s health across the globe. She trekked the Himalayas delivering medical supplies, taught in Amsterdam, worked with refugees in Germany, and supported orphanages in Brazil, where she met her husband, Lucas. Fluent in both English and Portuguese, Sara continues to apply her passion for advocacy to create equitable and empowered communities. In her free time, she loves to bake, go to the beach, and spoil her two dogs.”
