Alex Brown
Narrative and Strategic Communications Director
Alex Brown (she/they) is the Narrative & Strategic Communications Director at Housing California, where she leads the communications and narrative-shaping work of the organization and in coalition with our staff, members, and partners.
With over a decade of experience in the non-profit leadership and communications sectors, Alex has worked to advance the mission and shape the story of dozens of nonprofits and businesses, local and statewide political candidates, and social causes. Most recently, she worked as the Membership & Communications Director and Interim Executive Director for a statewide membership and policy association serving over 8,000 students, social workers, and social service leaders.
Previously, Alex served as the Communications Director for a major statewide congressional campaign, Audrey Denney for Congress, and played a key role in successfully shaping narrative in her rural California district (CA-01) around often divisive political issues including healthcare access, reproductive justice, and economic justice. In addition to reducing a historic 30 point victory margin to 9 points, the campaign garnered national attention and amassed $2.4 million in financial contributions – 70% of those contributions came from people living within the district.
Alex served as a Councilmember and Vice Mayor (2018-2020) on the Chico City Council from 2018-2022, where she advocated for just, humane, and evidence-informed local policy approaches to affordable housing, homelessness, and interconnected equity issues. She has run a communications consulting business since 2017 and has taught policy and community organizing courses in the CSU, Chico School of Social Work since 2019.
She holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work and Bachelor’s Degrees in Multicultural & Gender Studies and Psychology from California State University, Chico.
Outside of work, Alex is a musician and creative writer who enjoys traveling, making playlists, caring for over 70 houseplants, making home-cooked meals, and sharing time with family and friends.
